‘Go down deep enough into anything and you will find Mathematics’

The national curriculum states, ‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.’ Therefore, the intention for mathematics at All Saints’ is that all children, regardless of ability, become competent, independent mathematicians. ‘Pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.’

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to transfer and apply their skills in many contexts. In order to do this, we offer a cross-curricular approach to mathematics which allows children to further develop and consolidate their mathematical knowledge.

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the mathematics curriculum at the same pace. However, decisions about when to move on are based on the security of the children’s understanding and their readiness. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly are challenged by rich and sophisticated ideas and problems before moving onto any other concept. Those who are not fluent are given the opportunity to consolidate their learning further, including partaking in additional practice through same-day interventions.
