SEND Support and Scaffolding
SEND, New to English & New Starters
At All Saints, we are committed to supporting all children as acknowledged in our 5 elements of effective teaching and learning. We adapt our teaching to support our SEND children, New to English and new starters.
If a child with SEND needs requires support with decoding texts, we will make sure they have secure phonics knowledge. If they do not, they will complete a Little Wandle SEND intervention five times a week.
The use of question stems for the SEND or very low ability students should be adapted to suit the specific needs of individuals. These students should still be exposed to the whole class text. However, they will receive scaffolded, supported or personalised learning activities. Paired or group reading is an effective method of helping SEND students to improve their fluency and increase their confidence in reading aloud. Learners can be teamed up with peers who either have a higher level of reading fluency or the same level as them.
Students of such ability may provide drawn responses to texts following a separate continuum to other students.
If a child arrives who is New to English, they will be provided with support from our New to English team. They will follow the Rapid Catch Up Little Wandle phonics scheme to develop their decoding of the English language.
If a child arrives as a new starter, they will be assessed by their new teacher to see how confident their word reading is. If struggling to blend or recognise words, a Little Wandle placement assessment will be completed and will be placed in a relevant phonics intervention group. If confident, they will be assessed using a Star Reading assessment to obtain their ZPD.
